To identify typical tourist needs of Sicilian families, and get a valuable product definition, we investigate the consumer behaviour, and before, the features of the persons that in a family take the decision to go on holiday and their motivations. Traditional tourism statistics present several lacks in detecting tourists’ activities in space-time dimensions, due to their administrative nature, the increasing mobility of tourists and their independence in organizing trips. Since this information is fundamental for the destination management, the need to find new methods for collecting data concerning tourist activities emerges. Then, from the early years of new millennium, several researchers started to study and test the efficiency and the effectiveness of existing new technologies, such as GPS or Mobile Phone, to detect the paths followed by tourists and outline the features of tourist mobility.

Abstract The knowledge of the actual magnitude and main features of tourism flows in a given destination is an essential prerequisite for the evaluation of tourism impacts and externalities. Indeed, many pleasure trips are often characterized by the visit to more than a single destination.
